Last time I checked, we had a thriving campus/community radio station right here at UNB Saint John. Poor CBC, they only got $1.8 billion from the government in funding this year. Oh wait, the NCRA got none.

I like the CBC as much as the next person, but times are not as tough as they so proclaim.

You are of course absolutely correct, Brian, about our wonderful campus radio. I do perhaps have a tendency to give in to the rhetorical flourish. I think that the CBC is hurting more than you admit, but that is a separate issue. Vibrant community radio and public radio are mutually reinforcing. And they need to be, in the face of the commercial monolith!

You are quite right. I am absolutely a fan of the CBC and cuts to them likely means that commercial radio takes another cut of the pie when it comes to the airwaves. I am just running into more and more people who proclaim that not only will the CBC disappear, but that, as a result, we will lose what I have seen stated as “our station,” “our voice,” and “only only voice.”

I just hate to see the only truly community-run stations being ignored when times are very tight (as they almost always are) for them as well. Rallies like this are great, but it was quite upsetting when people originally called for fundraising, etc. for the CBC.

Yes, you’re right. In an effort to find a catchy slogan, some of us forgot the broader picture. One can only hope that the struggles around the CBC will sensitize people about the need for public media more generally.
