An Open Letter to Mr David Stevenson, Chair, Board of Governors, The University of New Brunswick
From the undersigned current and retired Faculty and Staff at the University of New Brunswick
24 April 2009
Dear Mr Stevenson,
As current and retired faculty and staff members at the University of New Brunswick, we wish to disassociate ourselves from the decision of the University’s Board of Governors to award an honorary doctorate to Premier Shawn Graham at this spring’s Convocation.
It would be impossible — and irresponsible — to forget that Mr. Graham’s government sponsored the $1.2 million L’Écuyer-Miner report that threatened three university campuses in New Brunswick. Only public outcry forced Mr. Graham to keep the University of New Brunswick and the Université de Moncton intact.
Mr. Graham’s actions in this respect cannot be regarded as having made an outstanding contribution to our communities, nor do they show regard for higher education in the province. For these reasons, we believe that Mr. Graham does not merit an honorary doctorate from UNB or any other university.
