Gordon Fairweather, 1923–2008

December 27, 2008

It is with great sadness that we report the death of Gordon Fairweather on Dec. 24, 2008. Many of us remember his speech in defense of UNB Saint John at the demonstration held in the Quad on September 25, 2007:

Reports from the the CBC, the Daily Gleaner, the Globe&Mail, the Montréal Gazette, La Presse Canadienne, and the Telegraph-Journal, (and an editorial).

A man of and for the people, he will be missed. We need more of his calibre.

I was honoured to meet this leader several times. We was a gentleman of the old school. He struck me as the type of person who had high standards and did not sell out for short-term political deals. Contrast this type of political leader to our local MLAs who stood silent as UNBSJ was in danger.
