“Employees in Postsecondary Institutions, Fall 2007, and Salaries of Full-Time Instructional Faculty, 2007-08” (download PDF), the latest annual report from the U.S. Education Department, shows a “significant” decline in full-time academic workers. (source)

And, according to the Modern Language Association (the national association for scholars in languages and literature in the U.S.), the situation is particularly dire in English and writing (download PDF). (source)

And Steve Street has a strong critique of the ways in which adjunct faculty, as they are called in the States, are characterized in some reports as sub-standard.
