November is Family Violence Prevention Month

November 10, 2008

The following UNB Saint John events are part of Family Violence Prevention Month:

NOV 13/08: Dr. Chris Doran, “The Deep Cultural Grammar of ‘Gender and Violence’: Some reflections on ‘Naming’ and ‘Re-Naming‘”: This talk concerns itself with the simultaneous ‘professionalisation’ and ‘de-politicisation’ of issues surrounding ‘gender and violence’ since the 1970’s. Drawing heavily on the insightful works of Carol Smart and Gillian Walker, in particular, this presentation shows how the activities of professional discourses (in ‘criminal law’ and ‘social services) worked to ‘absorb’ and ‘depoliticise’ embodied understandings in the crucial decade after the issue of ‘wife battering’ was first named.

Thursday, November 13, 2008, 13:00 — 14:30 at Oland Hall 104

Free and open to the public.
