UNB president criticizes province for inaction,” Jennifer Dunville, The Daily Gleaner (Nov. 8/08, A3): President John McLaughlin criticizes the provincial government for inaction on post-secondary education and warns that UNB can’t get “up the ladder without strong government support.” The story ends on a hopeful note, however.

Meanwhile, on a cautionary note (“Independence day,” The Telegram, Nov. 8/08, A3), Pam Frampton deplores the ongoing, and highly damaging, government interference with Memorial University.

In Ontario, there is a movement afoot towards province-wide bargaining: “CUPE working to gain student support to increase its clout,” Elizabeth Church, Globe and Mail (Nov. 8/08). UNB Provost Greg Kealey questions the effect of such broad organizing on institutional autonomy.
