Richard served as Director of Student Services at UNB Saint John for more than 20 years. During his time at UNB he also taught English literature, and over his two decades built a department that focused on student success and achievement through programming and service that focused on student development. He was also a writer and poet and encouraged many young writers as they worked through their craft.

Encounters is a small volume that represents more than 30 years of storytelling by this beloved professor and mentor. Dr. Papenhausen devotes compassion, joy and love in poems about the students, peers, friends, family members and strangers who enriched his life. He records his experiences of what was, to him, an adventurous walk through life and nature. Some poems encompass imagined dialogue with such figures as Allen Ginsberg, Bob Dylan and Franz Kafka. He also addresses trees, leaves and the elements. His last wish was that his painstakingly selected poems be shared with others and, at his request, enhanced by the artwork of his wife Marian and his photographer friend James Wilson.
