Quote of the day:

September 20, 2008

STU president Michael Higgins, in response to an interview question about his role:

In the end I think I am a public intellectual – somebody who takes his learning and tries to understand better what are the currents, the debates, the issues, and communicates them in ways that are intelligible and ways that allow university leaders to be seen as people who shape ideas rather than just people who are frightened of them because they are concerned about the daily running of an institution.

I think that university presidents should be people who bring to their leadership positions not only their learning, but their commitment to improve the quality of social discourse, because if we are not first and foremost intellectuals, and are primarily managers, why the hell are we doing this job?
