Message from AUNBT:

September 19, 2008

AUNBT has been bombarded by expressions of concern and requests for comment regarding yesterday’s announcement that the deputy minister associated most closely with the province’s ongoing attack on university autonomy and academic freedom (known ironically as the “Action Plan to Transform [sic] Post-Secondary Education in New Brunswick”) is being seconded to some role within the University of New Brunswick.  Premier Graham is quoted in the press as saying ominously that she would be “a very important conduit between the reforms we’re undertaking here through post-secondary education and the work that has to be undertaken at UNB”.

On your behalf we have sought and received explicit assurance from Dr McLaughlin that, whatever may be the form of Kelly’s service at UNB, it will have nothing to do with the province’s post-secondary policies and plans.

That it should fall to AUNBT to elicit and circulate this important information says much.

President, AUNBT

Did we get it in writing? with independent witnesses? and no, I am not being sarcastic; I am being realistic. Graham says she will be dealing with PSE — is he (the Government) paying her salary? If so, then logically he will have a say (more than others) over what she is doing.

Wait for it — someone at the University will decide she should be appointed as a tenured professor …
