Maritime Tiger?

September 16, 2008

We read that former President of Ireland Mary Robinson was recently in town and addressed the Economic Developers Association of Canada’s annual meeting. No doubt the economic successes of the “Celtic Tiger” (why not a dragon, one wonders?) tantalized those attending, but I hope moderator Frank McKenna and his colleagues will pay due attention to her admonition that “the turnaround would not have been possible without steps such as investing in education and research and development and working with its unions”:

Several times during her speech and question session, the former Irish president went out of her way to emphasize the importance of investing in primary and post-secondary education systems as well as having an affordable health-care system. Robinson said those were key assets as the country tried to recruit many of its ex-patriates that fled the country for jobs. (Source: NB Business Journal)

Because my blood runs cold when this government says it needs “to be bold.”

Bold is sometimes a word for bull-headed.
