A couple of things:

  • According to this blog post, when compared with other EU states, academics in the UK have the lowest level of protection for academic freedom, to the point where faculty do not speak out about problems with the quality of education for fear of reprisals. So perhaps stripping universities of their traditional rights is not the path to “excellence,” after all.
